What has been the pandemic’s impact on female equality?

Time: 5:30pm to 6:30pm

Have women been unfairly impacted by the pandemic? If so, is a lack of political representation to blame?

Predictions that the pandemic will have a devastating impact on gender equality appear to be borne out by recent reports. From child-care to home schooling and redundancy, women are bearing the brunt. Not to mention soaring levels of domestic violence. There is a risk of a two-tier workforce and an expansion of the gender pay gap.

Interestingly, few female-led countries – including Germany, New Zealand, Taiwan and Finland - have done badly, so how do we respond to observations that countries that badly served women during the pandemic were notable for a dearth of female voices at the heart of government?

Chaired by Gillian Martin MSP, Member of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee, this panel includes:

  • Dr Angela O’Hagan, Deputy Director of the WiSE Centre for Economic Justice, Convenor of the Scottish Women’s Budget Group
  • Hannah Stevens, Director of The Parliament Project
  • Talat Yaqoob, Chair of Women 50:50 and member of National Advisory Council on Women and Girls
  • David Devenney, Director, Fathers Network

The event is run in partnership with The Parliament Project.
