Event description

It is the biggest European conflict since World War II and has left millions of Ukrainians displaced inside and outside their country. Join the panel to discuss the causes and consequences of the annexation of Crimea and the Russian war in Ukraine. What are the global implications of the war on global economies, NATO, diplomacy, trade, and military support. And how will it end?

Dr Huseyn Aliyev is a Lecturer in Central and East European Studies at the University of Glasgow. Most of his research focuses on violent mobilization and individual participation in armed conflict. He currently leads a collaborative ESRC (UK Economic and Social Research Council)-funded research project “From Russia with War: Mobilisation of Foreign Fighters in the Former Soviet Union.” Dr Aliyev’s previous fieldwork-based research on pro-government mobilization in Ukraine.  

Professor Vladislav Zubok is Professor of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science, with expertise on the Cold War, the Soviet Union, Stalinism, and Russia’s intellectual history in the 20th century. Born and educated in Moscow, Professor Zubok continued his academic career as a visiting professor at various universities in America. His books have won many prizes with the most recent title being Collapse: the Fall of the Soviet Union, in 2021. Professor Zubok also consulted on the CNN documentary series, Cold War.
